Dr. Alex J. Ferikes is a member of the Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery team at Tuckahoe Orthopaedics.
Dr. Ferikes is originally from Asheville, North Carolina and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then went on to medical school at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, graduating in 2012. He then matched into Orthopaedic Surgery residency at UPMC-Hamot in Erie, Pennsylvania. He went on to spend one additional year of fellowship training at the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. Ferikes began his practice in 2018 in Layton, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City and spent 3.5 years there before moving to Richmond.
Dr. Ferikes is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
He believes as an orthopedic surgeon the best approach with his patients is a shared decision making process to allow each patient to make an educated decision about the treatments available to them. This allows patients to guide their individualized treatment and best reach their goals. He believes that one of the biggest roles as an orthopedic surgeon is to help people remain active as they age. If something is preventing a patient from staying active, he will work to find a way to get them back to normal.
Dr. Ferikes treats the entire upper extremity from shoulder to fingertip consistent with the fellowship training he completed. He has an interest in nearly all disorders of the upper extremity including special interests in the treatment of arthritis, fractures, post-traumatic reconstruction, nerve compression syndromes, and sports-related injuries of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.
Outside of medicine he enjoys spending time with his family and three young children. He especially enjoys hiking, running, and playing soccer.
